Team Racing Clinic

Join us for a fun, informal day of Sonar team racing. This event will provide the perfect opportunity for local sailors to learn more about team-race tactics and strategy, as well as get plenty of on-the-water practice. Ken Legler, renowned Tufts Sailing Team coach and team race guru, will be our instructor for the day. He’ll demystify the moves for novices and help more seasoned team racers reach the next level of competence at the game. We promise lots of laughs and a great time, so you won’t want to miss this fun event!

Schedule
9:30 – 10:00 AM Registration and Check-In
EYC Galley Grille (ground floor of club)

10:00 – 11:00 AM Chalk Talk and Skippers’ Meeting
Ken will cover team race basics as well as more sophisticated plays.
Please launch your Sonar beforehand. (High tide 8:05 A.M.)

12:00 – 3:00 PM Team Race Round Robin
We’ll set up teams with the goal of providing as evenly matched racing as possible. You enter the event as an individual boat, not as a three-boat team.
Races will be quick, about 15 minutes each. Racing area will be in the vicinity of the RG Bell Buoy to the East of Marblehead Rock.
Ken will provide expert on-the-water commentary and coaching. Don’t forget your VHF radio so you can listen in. The emphasis will be on learning and practicing the moves – and having fun – rather than winning.

5:00 – 6:00 PM Debrief and Refreshments
On the EYC lawn (or Galley Grille if the weather is foul).
Ken will lead a post-race discussion to help us make sense of it all.

Eligibility
Open to anyone with a Sonar and the people to sail it for the day. Yacht club membership is not required. (If you’re interested in participating but you don’t have a Sonar, let us know.)
Don’t worry about missing the MRA Sonar races; they won’t count for the season’s scoring.

Rules
Racing will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing ‘01-‘04, including Appendix D (Team Racing Rules), except as altered by the Sailing Instructions. There may be on-the-water observers (App. D2.3), but there will be no umpires.

Cost
$10 per boat if you register by 6 PM June 10. $20 per boat thereafter.
